Water Damage Removal with SERVPRO Extraction and Drying Tools

Helping Plainfield Homeowners Reduce Water Damage Risk

According to the EPA, even a small pipe or faucet leak that ekes out a drop of water per second can use up 3,000 gallons--or 180 showers' worth--after a year. That can prove quite costly for Plainfield homeowners because this moisture can cause structural complications and mold growth well before that happens. Mold growth after even mild water damage can occur in as little as 24 to 48 hours.

When Plainfield property owners need water remediation, SERVPRO's fast-acting 24-hour service is prepared to begin the process. Regardless of the scale of the disaster, these highly-trained technicians are equipped to remediate damage, remove irreparable materials, and remediate bacterial growth that can impact a home's comfort and sanitation.

Evaluating Effective Water Damage Practices for Homeowners

After water damage occurs, homeowners can:

  • Keep damaged parts after repairs are made for the insurance company to evaluate when determining compensation
  • When it is safe, shut off breakers to prevent potential electrical issues and remove electrical devices that are on the floor or low to the ground, including items like phone chargers or surge protectors
  • Place foil under furniture legs or other wood items treated with stains. This precaution can prevent finishes from transferring to carpet and permanently staining it

It is advisable to avoid:

  • Attempting to dry water damage with inked paper because the ink can transfer to impacted surfaces
  • Activate heating or air conditioning without the express approval of a licensed restoration professional/ Operating these systems can potentially spread microbes and contaminants in moisture. Homeowners should also avoid adjusting the thermostat, as changes in temperature impact restoration efforts significantly
  • Using electrical equipment like wet/dry vacuums to remove moisture can damage the item in use and create a shock risk for the operator

SERVPRO Water Remediation Tools and Processes for Residences

SERVPRO technicians' equipment, inspection methods, and restoration strategies are tailored to thorough water removal and returning moisture levels to normal as efficiently as possible. This firm's restoration strategies can reduce repair costs by only performing the demolition needed to implement water cleanup.

  • SERVPRO techs may deploy polyethylene sheeting to cover surfaces and create drying chambers. This process can reduce the time and stress placed on air movers and dehumidifiers during the drying process
  • EPA-registered antimicrobials can be manually applied or sprayed on surfaces depending on the extent of contamination potential. Carpet and upholstery requiring spot treatments can be injected with solutions
  • Technicians can prevent wet spots on upholstery by wetting the entire fabric. However, overall treatment depends on the composition of the fibers in question. SERVPRO keeps documentation on hand related to a wide array of upholstery fabrics so that crew members can administer the correct type of care
  • Drywall, tiles, or carpeting may only require partial removal for drying wall cavities or subfloors. Many materials can be reinstalled. However, if delamination is present, materials like laminate flooring and delaminated carpet are more cost-effective to replace
  • Hot water extraction tools can be used on carpeting, upholstery, and drapes to quickly dry furnishings, rugs, and carpets while also sanitizing the treated material. Hot water and OSHA-approved cleaning solutions can both be applied during extraction while the vacuum component of a given extraction unit collects wastewater for disposal

SERVPRO can also implement repairs for demolition tasks undertaken during water restoration, including replacing flooring, baseboards, and drywall.

Helping Plainfield Homeowners with Their Fire Damage Claims

11/11/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO helps stressed Plainfield homeowners with their fire damage insurance claims. We can help.

24/7 SERVPRO Fire Mitigation Can Restore Homes

A small fire can cost Plainfield homeowners an average of $3,500 to $5,000. More extensive repairs, like kitchen cabinet replacement or rebuilding rooms, can skyrocket costs to $50,000 or more. These repairs can balloon further without adequate fire damage restoration and repair from trained professionals. Solutions could become especially costly if the damage were not addressed within the first 48 hours after fire suppression.

SERVPRO fire damage remediation specialists help Plainfield homeowners save time and money by adhering to restoration industry best practices, focusing on repair over replacement. While some materials may be more cost-effective to replace, SERVPRO techs can respond quickly and minimize downtime to make a property clean and livable.

Speaking with Insurance Agents About Home Fire Damage Claims

It can be overwhelming to contact an insurer after a sudden disaster occurs. However, it is a necessary step for returning to a clean, comfortable home with repairs covered by a home insurance policy.

Consider contacting the insurance company about the following after fire damage occurs:

  • First and foremost: report the incident as soon as possible. This step should be a property owner's first contact with their agent. The faster this contact is made, the more quickly a claim can be successfully filed and paid out
  • After a fire, residents needing temporary housing should contact the insurer about what is covered under their policy and where to go. However, this is not guaranteed. Some policy terms may only cover food or other partial reimbursement costs
  • Homeowners may be curious whether selling the home would be more efficient. If damages are minor, it is advisable to keep the house and make repairs. In cases like structure fires in homes that were already in some state of disrepair before the disaster, selling may be a good idea for homes whose insurance does not cover all the repair costs needed for the property

Homeowners are not limited to using the fire restoration companies that insurers recommend. They also do not have to wait until an adjuster has examined the property to call a trusted firm of their choosing. SERVPRO inventory logging practices can assist significantly with claims filing while also providing documentation for mitigation and repairs.

How SERVPRO Addresses Different Fire and Smoke Damage Soils

Fire restoration technicians at SERVPRO can deploy multiple solutions for soot and smoke damage soils, which often feature numerous types of soils.

  • Pungent protein residues from kitchen fires are removable with commercial-grade enzyme digesters, which can convert these greasy materials into water-soluble residues free of malodors
  • Dry clumps and layers of soot can often be manually dislodged and gently treated with dry cleaning solutions like Crumbly Cleaner, which
  • Meanwhile, wet soot deposits typically require wet cleaning with specialized, EPA-registered solutions for successful removal without smearing. These sticky residues often come from burnt rubbers, plastics, and other petroleum products. Moderate to heavy soot may require alkaline cleaners rather than mild detergents
  • Charring on materials like salvageable wood can be remediated with gentle yet effective abrasion cleaning. Blast media like soda ash also has deodorizing properties

SERVPRO can also implement moisture remediation for fire suppression, odor control with thermal foggers, and containment measures for collecting soot with HEPA filter vacuums. HVAC cleaning and duct sealing prevent smoke damage particles from spreading in the home during restoration.

Homeowners can contact the SERVPRO of Hendricks County crew at (317) 838-0100 for "Like it never even happened" restoration services.

Cleaning Up Flood Damage in Indianapolis Requires Swift Action

11/6/2022 (Permalink)

Removing excess water from the crawl spaces in your home is critical for maintaining your foundation’s integrity. Contact SERVPRO right away.

Clearing Flood Damage in Indianapolis Crawl spaces

Many Indianapolis homes have a crawlspace, and when flooding occurs around the city’s residential areas, these open areas under a house can be adversely affected. Our SERVPRO team can respond fast for flood recovery, protecting your home in many ways.

Pooling Standing Water Threats

SERVPRO professionals addressing flood damage in Indianapolis homes first prioritize the removal of standing water. Clearing surface water is the first step in flood recovery, even in crawl spaces. With the confined space of this limited area under the house, the full scope of available extractors is not available. We can utilize options like:

  • Wet vacuums
  • High-pressure pumps
  • Truck-mount extractors

Wet Materials and Saturation

Many porous materials can absorb moisture and threaten their structural integrity. Many crawl spaces have exposed structural supports, and the subfloor and joists of the main floor of the house are visible inside. Standing water can impact these materials, even less porous materials like concrete masonry units, to compromise their strength and stability.

Why Moisture Threatens Your Home

Moisture can be one of the main threats when flooding occurs in a crawlspace. Constant humidity and dampness are ideal environments for mold growth and microbial colonization. Fungus and mildew can be hazardous to your building materials, especially supports for the property in this crawlspace under the house. Dehumidification equipment is needed to regulate environmental moisture and prevent conditions that facilitate mold growth.

The Benefit of Encapsulation Services

One of the steps that can protect against future flood and water damage concerns is encapsulation. Crawlspaces can have standing water damage for days on end as water is often slow to recede after disasters. Encapsulating the space wards off direct water penetration and redirects any flooding away from the house with permanently installed sump pumps. Surfaces are protected against mold development and covered with thick polypropylene sheeting.

Understanding how to manage flood damage in your home is important in returning a crawlspace to preloss condition after storms. Give our SERVPRO of Indianapolis South team a call to help with mitigation and restoration services at (317) 784-3008.

Water Restoration in Indianapolis Commercial Buildings

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO offers advanced equipment to extract water from commercial buildings in Indianapolis. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Minimizing the Impact of Water Damage in Indianapolis

Modern plumbing technologies may have reduced the chances for leaks to develop in Indianapolis commercial premises. However, plumbing connections still have the potential to spring a leak, and unless moisture begins to pool beside a fixture or the floor near it becomes spongy, you may not know this is happening.

The cost of water restoration in an Indianapolis commercial premises could be the least of your problem if the loss is so severe it forces tenants to vacate or lose revenue. Quickly acting is crucial since you want to tackle the damage fast and take preventative measures to ensure intrusions do not happen again. The process is complicated since it involves extensive inspections and drying to address all moisture pockets in the affected areas.

Restoration in commercial premises is usually complex due to

  • The size of the building
  • Required equipment
  • The extent of damage
  • The number of people

Moisture removal and drying process

If you are dealing with standing water, this may destroy electronics, furniture, business records, and even metal countertops if left for too long. SERVPRO helps restore your premises to normal mitigating further damage and loss of equipment. We use a submersible pump or portable pumps for commercial buildings to remove water accumulations in various structures around the premises. These pumps are highly efficient and make drying entire sections easier.

What influences the choice of extractor

  • Depth of standing water
  • Pooling patterns
  • Whether it is slurry or clear water

We also use refrigerant and desiccant dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the air and the affected materials. This process helps lower the humidity level, which is beneficial in many ways, including reducing microbial growth. Desiccant dehumidifiers use chemical agents to absorb moisture from the environment naturally. Refrigerant dehumidifiers, on the other hand, cool the air to reduce its ability to retain water.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South emergency water restoration team is available 24/7, ready to respond quickly when you call. You can reach us at (317) 784-3008. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

What to Expect From Mold Remediation in Greenwood Homes

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

Mold remediation in Greenwood homes and basements professionally mitigated? Call SERVPRO.

SERVPRO Helps Greenwood Homes Perform Safe Mold Cleanup

Water intrusion events are a common cause of mold growth, especially if mitigation is not enforced immediately. Some of these problems are not as easy to detect. For example, a leaking pipe inside the walls of your Greenwood home may go unnoticed for a long time. You may never see the usual signs of damage if the water collects behind tiled walls.

If you sniff something musty, you need mold remediation in your Greenwood home since odors are a good sign of a mold source nearby. Some species, however, do not give off odors. More subtle hints may pop up, such as yellow, brown, or orange discoloration of walls. Depending on the organic substance that has been affected, colors may vary. SERVPRO professionals help homeowners determine if they have mold growing in their homes and offer guidance on the best approaches.

Mold on drywall leads to

  • Rotting baseboards
  • Contents cross-contamination
  • Damage within wall cavities

When walls have visible signs of mold, the colonies may have already spread to the furniture adjacent to that wall. Moving it out of the room before cleaning may lead to cross-contamination.

How to perform safe remediation

To check for infestation inside drywall, SERVPRO cuts a small section and uses a bore scope to inspect cavities visually. Based on our observation, we make containments to protect occupants. Our technicians install containment around the doors, in the AC vents, and 6-mil polyethylene on the windows. We then set up the air purification device to trap any particulate residue from the air while the work goes on. We always have our team wear PPEs.

Other effective measures

  • Wire brushing semi-porous materials like wood
  • Damp wiping surfaces with antimicrobial detergent
  • Dry off the wall cavities and other enclosed spaces

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South guarantees professional mold remediation services. We conduct the process according to industry standards with a team of IICRC- certified and well-trained technicians and proper equipment. Call us at (317) 784-3008. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster

Helping Reduce the Cost of Fire Restoration in Indianapolis

8/7/2022 (Permalink)

Dealing with fire damage can often be overwhelming. Contact SERVPRO 24/7 to quickly assess and start the remediation process in your home.

Fire Restoration of Furniture Greatly Cuts Costs

Fire restoration that includes as much of an Indianapolis area home’s contents reduces the cost of returning to normal to a fraction of what it would cost to replace everything. While the condition of some items and materials might require replacements, cleaning and repairing keep a check on total costs.

Property owners in Indianapolis facing fire restoration of their residence after a blaze already know the unexpected costs can impact every aspect of family life. SERVPRO technicians understand that our customers want an inexpensive recovery that concludes as quickly as possible. Costly items like hardwood furniture are often salvageable.

Restoring furniture does more than control costs, also. Furniture pieces help people keep memories alive of many memorable moments. Here are some ways we perform fire restoration of furniture for our customers:

  • Repairing and restoring finishes on wooden areas,
  • Strengthening warped areas of support structures, and
  • Cleaning upholstered cushions, armrests, and accent pieces.

When finishes of fine furniture get too close to a fire, the finish can separate from the wood and appear blistered or bubbled. We sand this off carefully and reapply a finish that matches the rest of the wood. Sanding happens after cleaning, so we rarely sand an entire item.

Areas underneath chairs and couches that provide structure and support do not receive staining and other finishes before being sold. This lack of treatment, which is normal, allows water from firefighters to seep into the wood. These areas can then become warped and twisted. We restore the structure by removing and replacing these struts and small beams or rapidly drying them within a brace.

Brushing, sponging, and vacuuming soot off upholstered areas helps keep the soot from settling in deeper and causing more damage. We also apply deodorizing scents that help diminish the malodors fires are known to produce.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South’s emergency services line is (317) 784-3008, available 24/7, every day of the year. We can help make everything “Like it never even happened” for you and your family.

Fire Damage can Affect Furnishings in a Greenwood Hotel

8/7/2022 (Permalink)

Mitigating the fire damage situation in your commercial space is our specialty. Contact SERVPRO to assess the damage and bring equipment to help.

Fire Damage Adds Up through the Little Things

A fire within your Greenwood hotel’s kitchen and restaurant can create a detrimental situation. Guests expecting a relaxed and elegant dining experience but served on substitute tableware might feel disappointed. Fire damage can cause serious after effects, but SERVPRO can help.

When your hotel in Greenwood has fire damage to the kitchen area, we understand that this is a significant percentage of your revenue. We can help you quickly determine what you need to replace and what we can salvage through restoration efforts.

Here are some ways that fire damage can affect the furnishings in your kitchen and dining area:

  • Stress cracks in fine china, porcelain, or other tableware items,
  • Corrosion of flatware and cutlery, and
  • Blistering of shellac on finer pieces of furniture.

Fragile items might develop tiny, almost microscopic, cracks within their surfaces when exposed to extreme heat. We need to clean these items carefully to detect any such damage. It would be best to replace pieces like these to protect your diners. These cracks can harbor soot, bacteria, and other contaminants. The cracks can also deepen and result in chips coming loose.

Metal items like your flatware can become tarnished or corroded because of the combination of heat, moisture, and soot. Soot often contains caustic chemicals that can etch fine lines into metal. Cutlery might require replacements, as well, because their cutting edges can become dull. Getting these clean and free of soot protects them from permanent damage.

Heavy pieces of furniture, wooden serving trays, and anything else with finished wood can also become chipped and rough. Varnishes look quite elegant and formal when they are fresh and intact. When heated, though, the varnishes separate from the wood surface. We can repair these quickly, so you do not need to purchase replacements. We also have reliable techniques to address soot that adheres to any upholstery.

Water Cleanup for Indianapolis Businesses when Emergencies Strike

8/7/2022 (Permalink)

Whether it’s your business or your home that is affected by the water damage, team SERVPRO can help. Contact us right away for restoration services.

Water Cleanup Gets Everything Stable Again

Emergencies can cause enormous stress for everyone close to the tumultuous situation. Crises involving water are worse than other kinds because of the very nature of liquids. When your business in Indianapolis needs water cleanup services, SERVPRO knows what to do to help, so interruptions and delays are minimized.

Businesses in Indianapolis use water cleanup for its many benefits. SERVPRO follows specific protocols to provide our customers with unvarying results. Most of these come from IICRC standards, which are used worldwide for their effectiveness. Consistent methods assist our customers by:

  • Helping them reassure their employees regarding future employment,
  • Controlling or decreasing overall future losses, and
  • Reducing the amount of restoration work needed by the business’ building.

When faced with sudden disaster changes, many employees become preoccupied with their job’s stability. If the company goes out of business, its employment opportunities and related benefits disappear. To protect themselves, some employees start looking elsewhere for employment. Giving staff a timeline of water cleanup activities and restoration work can help retain valuable employees.

While we cannot salvage everything already ruined by water, we can keep additional inventory from becoming damaged. Preventing future losses requires a lot of preventative work, such as applying oils or waxes to metal objects, relocating highly susceptible items to our secure warehouse for short-term safekeeping, and monitoring moisture levels in the air.

Cleaning water from surfaces eliminates a large percentage of microbes, mainly when we apply topical antimicrobials. Your business has a much lower risk of needing mold remediation restoration work. Another example is after prompt cleaning and drying of floors, fewer B2B customers find cupping and warping, loosened tiles, and other water damaged appearances. Removing water and restoring pristine conditions can protect your existing electrical wiring system.

When you need a rapid response to a water emergency, call SERVPRO of Indianapolis South at (317) 784-3008. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South Brings Ingenuity to Water Damage Restoration

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO has advanced equipment, some developed by our team, to expedite water extraction from flooded Indianapolis warehouses and structures.

Why SERVPRO Is the Right Choice for Water Extraction

We have all heard the expression that "Necessity is the mother of invention." The owner / general manager of this SERVPRO franchise, Steve Dussault, took the slogan to heart and developed a useful water extraction tool.

Commercial water extraction is crucial to keeping warehouses and fabrication plants operational during significant water leaks or flooding events in Indianapolis. Typically, flooding on large concrete pads in these types of facilities is not deep; often only about 1/4", but the water migrates over a large area. The overall volume of water may be hundreds to thousands of gallons, sufficient to disrupt business routines.

The Shallow Water Removal Tool

Since time is of the essence for water extraction to minimize work stoppages and potential capital equipment and inventory losses, our SERVPRO owner created this simple device to remove standing water from hard, concrete surfaces effortlessly. This tool is attached to the end of a portable or truck-mounted extractor wand.

The Basic Components of the Shallow Water Extraction Tool

  • 6" PVC pipe cap
  • 8" Drain cover (fits 6" PVC pipe)
  • 1 ½" ABS bulkhead fitting
  • 1 ½" PVC pipe and 90-degree elbow
  • Suction air inlet – cut from 5-gallon bucket lid or other scrap plastic. Secured with stainless bolt, washers, and nylon insert locknut.
  • 3 GM plastic push rivets – provide space to keep the suction screen slightly off the floor

The Photo illustrates the device with the gooseneck PVC connector and the black strainer that sets in the low point of the extraction area. The truck-mounted water pump hose on our SERVPRO van, or a portable extractor for a smaller volume of water, connects to the unit. Our extractors pull a powerful vacuum and can quickly extract large quantities of liquid.

We aim to service our Indianapolis commercial customers and residential neighbors most efficiently and cost-effectively to restore their properties to preloss condition, "Like it never even happened." Even with our advanced inventory of water damage restoration equipment, small innovations like this shallow water extractor provide added techniques for service improvement.

Choosing the Best Fire Restoration Cleanup for Indianapolis Homes

7/10/2022 (Permalink)

If a fire occurs in your home, contact SERVPRO right away. Our certified technicians are ready to help mitigate and then remediate the fire damage.

Fire Restoration Starts with Basic Principles

While many variables can make every fire damage cleanup and recovery situation unique, at its core, handling post-fire effects is a matter of basic principles. Early mitigation and focused cleaning can help restore your home to preloss condition.

The Principles of Smoke Damage Cleanup

Multiple factors shape the necessary fire restoration in Indianapolis homes. Cleaning after extinguishment means overcoming smoke damage in several forms across many surfaces. We can choose the best cleaning implement with early discovery action:

  • Inspection of the Work Area - We must determine the extent of the damage and the severity of heaped debris to choose the ideal restoration solution to help.
  • Smoke Residue Identification - Knowing the type of smoke damage residue can also help choose the best cleaning approach. For instance, wet and dry smoke damages require significantly different restoration solutions.
  • Affected Surfaces - Understanding the affected material can influence the type of cleaning practice chosen to help. It is always our intention to preserve and protect underlying substrates when possible.
  • Capturing and Removing Residues - We have several products intended to emulsify particles still on surfaces after brushing or vacuuming.

Smoke Odor Removal After Fires

Another potentially challenging aspect of fire damage restoration and remediation is removing smoke odors. Combustion burns many materials, some releasing aerosolized odor compounds that are offensive and overwhelming in the affected space. We have several deodorization practices and products to help, but oxidation and processes like pairing with wet fogging equipment are among the most effective.

With multiple types of smoke damage and the different ways it can impact your home, it is crucial to have a team prepared with various mitigation and restoration solutions. You can count on the swift arrival of our SERVPRO of Indianapolis South team to help when your home gets damaged. Call us at (317) 784-3008.

Influences that Worsen Fire Damage in Greenwood Homes

7/10/2022 (Permalink)

If your home or business is struck by fire damage, contact SERVPRO. Our technicians are ready for the job and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Damage Must Be Cleaned Quickly

There are many instances where the resulting damage to a home after a fire can be a considerable cleanup and restoration challenge for responding professionals. Even with the experience of our SERVPRO team, we have many obstacles and hurdles that prevent the fast and focused cleanup of smoke damage to the structure. In addition, various types of smoke damage require different cleanup approaches entirely, so first, our team must identify the type of damage:

  • Wet smoke
  • Dry smoke
  • Grease fire residues
  • Furnace puff backs

Moisture in the Environment

Moisture is one of the major influential factors to the ease of cleaning fire damage in Greenwood homes and businesses. Wet surfaces are harder to clean, as this humid or damp environment slows the combustion process and creates more of a smoldering effect than a rapid burn.

High Heat Fires

Likewise, high heat fires also present specific cleaning obstacles for our professionals. While the residues might not be as thick, higher heat fires put smoke under pressure and drive it into porous surfaces like drywall and wood.

Contact Time with Smoke Damage

Another factor that changes the restoration needed after fire and smoke damage is how long materials and contents are exposed. The longer it takes for restoration and mitigation to begin, the thicker surface residues become as smoke solids settle on horizontal planes.

Age of Impacted Material

As a general rule, the older a surface or building material is, the harder it will be to clean and restore when exposed to smoke damage. SERVPRO professionals must act fast to protect these items with non-abrasive tactics that might damage the underlying substrate.

Several factors and variables can influence how easily surfaces can get cleaned and restored after smoke exposure. We carefully inspect and evaluate impacted contents and building materials to provide the fastest and most thorough fire cleanup. Give our SERVPRO of Indianapolis South team a call today at (317) 784-3008.

Water Cleanup After a Leak in an Indianapolis Office Building

7/10/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage can seriously affect your business. Contact SERVPRO for remediation and mitigation services to get your business back up and running.

Leaks Require Several Types of Water Cleanup

Water restoration and cleanup are vital to keeping businesses going after emergencies like leaks and plumbing breaks. There are several critical points that we focus on during initial mitigation and restoration, including:

  • Standing water
  • Trapped water
  • Ruined materials
  • Surface cleaning

Removing Standing Water

Surface extraction is one of the first significant steps of water cleanup for Indianapolis office buildings. Multi-story structures present an obstacle, however. High-pressure pumps and wet vacuums are trusted solutions when water damage occurs several stories from the ground.

Water Caught in Porous Materials

Saturation is another concern for office buildings, especially for materials like carpeting in the main workspaces in the structure. This flooring can rapidly be overwhelmed and fully saturated, making it vital for our SERVPRO team to introduce carpet wands and weighted extractors to preserve this carpeting if possible.

Sagging or Collapsed Bulk Elements

Leaks and burst pipes in the drop ceiling where plumbing can be hidden can result in many ruined building materials. Not only can the force of this burst damage or destroy the thin framing of a drop ceiling, but individual tiles become quickly oversaturated and ruined. SERVPRO must collect and discard any ruined elements from the property to prepare the building for needed reconstruction after drying.

Cleaning Affected Surfaces

Cleanup can mean the removal of residues and soil deposits after prolonged water exposure or just ensuring that impacted items like desks and furniture are cleaned individually. Protecting sensitive surfaces from developing mold colonies is critical, so part of the surface treatment we can provide includes microbial inhibitors.

Water mitigation and restoration are especially critical in Indianapolis's many multi-story office buildings. The city's structures rely on the fast response and experience of our SERVPRO of Indianapolis South team. Give us a call when you need us at (317) 784-3008.

Is It Time To Replace Your Hot Water Heater?

5/1/2022 (Permalink)

Hot water is sometimes a luxury (bubble baths and long showers) and sometimes a necessity (laundry and clean dishes). So, when a water heater fails or ruptures, it can leave you in the cold as well as causing thousands of dollars in water damage to your home or business. In the event your property is flooded or damaged, it is imperative that you seek a reliable and well-respected flood and water restoration company to remediate the damage.

Here are some signs you might need a new electric or gas water heater:

  • Rust around the base of the water heater. A common sign that your water heater is leaking is rust around the base, on the floor or near the drainage tap. This means the base is compromised. Even if there isn’t any visible pooled water, there could be a very slow leak that is causing the rust and if so, it won’t be long before the bottom of the unit totally fails and you get a flood of hot water.
  • Unusual noises. Hot water heaters and tanks that make knocking noises, creaks, whines or bangs should be examined and assessed by a plumber as quickly as possible. These annoying and often loud noises could be a sign that the heating element is struggling to keep up with the demand. If you live in an area with hard water, it is possible that there is heavy sediment at the bottom of the tank keeping the water heater from performing optimally. If so, a thorough flushing of the system should correct the problem. However, if left untreated, it is possible for the heating element to fail or burn out.
  • Fluctuating temperatures. Of course, if you are experiencing water that is too hot or not hot enough, your water heater may need to be repaired or replaced. Broken heating elements or gas thermocouples are often to blame when the water doesn’t get hot, and those can be replaced without replacing the entire unit. However, if you are already having work done to your water heater, have the tank itself checked for cracks, fissures or other signs of weakness. These could cause a tank failure, resulting in a flood in your home or business. The cost to replace your water heater now could end up being cheaper in the long run.
  • Tankless water heaters can also cause water damage. Tankless water heaters are becoming more popular, but don’t think that just because there’s not a tank of water connected that you can’t experience massive water damage. Check the couplings and the hoses at least once a year to ensure everything is still working properly. If you are going out of town, you might consider turning it off all together, as the emergency couplings can sometimes fail. And as with a regular electric or gas water heater, look for signs of leaking such as rust, dampness and changes in water temperature.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South regularly sees properties each year affected by failed water heaters. Often kept in the attic or garage, when units fail and cause a flood, it’s usually personal items, family heirlooms and photos that are damaged. Fortunately, our highly trained professional technicians have the experience and tools necessary to clean up the water damage properly and bring your home and personal belongings back to pre-flood condition.

For emergencies and other situations, call 317-784-3008 anytime to reach your area flood damage experts, SERVPRO of Indianapolis South. We help residential and commercial property owners when natural disasters, water damage, sewer backups, floods, mold infestations, fires and other events happen.

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Southport Home

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Indianapolis South will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore, smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

12/12/2021 (Permalink)

Air Purification After Fire Damage

Smoke smells and smoke damage are present in the air after a fire, which will require removal purifying. A restoration company will employ a variety of techniques to clean and sanitize the air so that the property can be usable once again. Fire damage restoration cannot be complete without a complete purification of the air.

A fire in a business can extensively damage drywall or paint, which will need to be restored last once all other damage is handled. Once the smoke smell is completely removed, fire cleanup and be completed with aesthetic touches. Complete fire damage restoration will leave the property completely usable. Commercial fire damage is reversed to the point where business can resume as usual, "Like it never even happened."

The stability provided by a restoration company after a fire in a home or a fire in a business is incomparable to that of an individual handling the situation by him- or herself. Fire cleanup is a complicated task that requires specialized equipment and multiple technicians depending on the extent of the fire damage. It is almost impossible to reverse commercial fire damage without help. Whether it is just to board up the property or to remove all the water from firefighting, a company takes on a lot of the burden, providing stability to a shaken individual.

Is your Bargersville residence ready? Let’s talk about ways to prepare.

  • Do a roof inspection. Are any shingles loose or damaged? Replace any that could be an issue to protect attic or work space from water damage.
  • Check interior walls and ceilings for signs of water damage; this could be an indication of roof leaks.
  • Trim any trees and bushes next to your residence. Be sure to cut back branches that could become waterlogged and break off, damaging property.
  • Ensure that all doors and windows are secure, and that weather-stripping is in good condition.
  • Look for water collecting around the foundation of your Bargersville residence, and take steps to redirect it, if needed, to avoid water damage.
  • If your home is located near flooding areas, stockpiling sandbags to protect your property and parking areas would be a good idea.
  • Any erosion on your property will need to be handled before the rains come so that your home won’t suffer from mudslides.
  • Make sure the city drains near your residence are clear of debris and earth.

Preparedness in the event of any kind of extreme weather is always a good idea, to protect your home and property from loss and damage. Taking the time to assess your situation and thinking ahead about what may come is a good way to keep your investment secure.

Do You Know What To Do If Your Toilet Overflows?

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

We returned this Indianapolis homeowner to "Like it never even happened."

Oh no, the toilet is overflowing is a message you hope you never hear!  But rest assured, unfortunately, it happens all the time and our SERVPRO of Indianapolis South technicians are just a phone call away.

If your toilet begins to overflow following a flush, you want to make sure you stop the flow of water immediately to minimize any water damage.  To do this, remove the tank lid and press down on the bottom flapper valve.  This will prevent any additional water from getting into the toilet bowl.  Once you have pressed the flapper valve, lift the float that operates the tank fill valve to stop the tank from filling.  This should allow the water level to drop; otherwise, turn off the water valve behind your toilet by turning it clockwise.

The Source of the toilet bowl overflow might be a Clog

You may have a blockage in the toilet bowl or a clogged drain or sewer line.  If you are on a septic system, your septic tank may be full.

Our SERVPRO technicians are trained water damage restoration professionals and certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).  Let SERVPRO of Indianapolis South be the calm in your chaos the next time your toilet overflows.  Our vehicles are fully equipped with state-of-the-art water extraction, drying, and moisture testing equipment to handle your loss.

Are You Ready For A Disaster? We Are At SERVPRO of Indianapolis South

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

Storms occur with little warning and can be especially devastating, so you’ll need the company that you can trust to rise to the occasion.

Your Franklin home is your most valuable asset so don’t get caught in the rain.  Take steps now to secure your property before April showers dampen your mood.

Storms can happen in the blink of an eye with little to no warning.  The aftermath of not being prepared can be stressful and costly.  Taking the time to address a few key areas of concern can make a huge difference between staying high and dry or up to your knees in water.  One of the best things you can do to get prepared is to pretend there is a storm coming right now and take action.

  1. Purchase supplies you may need should you lose power or water supply for a period of time; batteries, a backup generator, bottled water, canned foods and gas just to name a few.  Purchasing these items ahead of time, you can avoid can save you time standing in line for hours and risking supplies running out.
  2. Make sure that you have the proper insurance plan in place. Check on your policy so that you are familiar with what is and what is not covered and to make sure that everything is current.
  3. Do what you can to secure your property. Seal up any cracks or gaps around windows and doors and check your roof for any broken or loose shingles. Installing items such as window shutters, garage door braces, and roof clips can all help to protect your Franklin home as well.  These resources can be costly but they can save you money in the long run!
  4. Take care of the trees surrounding your home.  Make sure to keep trees pruned and healthy.  Remove any dead branches and trim back any limbs that could become a danger to your house.  Overhanging limbs can scrape the roof and damage shingles or can bust through windows.  Properly maintaining your landscaping is an easy and necessary task in being proactive against storm damage.  So, keep your yard picked up and clear of debris.
  5. Also, secure patio furniture and pick up any items such as sporting equipment or lawn items and put them in an appropriate storage space.

Storms are truly unpredictable and sometimes damage is unavoidable. Taking proactive measures can help but also be sure to have the contact information for your local SERVPRO of Indianapolis South professional services handy should you need help with the aftermath!

SERVPRO Tip: Easy Storm Clean Up Tricks

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Indianapolis West technicians are highly trained to properly clean and restore your house so that it feels like home again.

Before the storm hits, homeowners are concerned about their safety first. This is important; however, when the storm dies down and you’re left with pieces to pick up, it’s important to know how to deal with it. The more you know in advance, the easier the process is sure to be. This process involves handling water damage, deciding what to tear out and a full storm restoration.

1. Extract All Water

Because you often can’t get back into your home until all the water is removed, it’s imperative that you invest in flood water extraction. Keep in mind that flood water is often contaminated. After 24 hours, it’s considered black water and full of contaminants. The safest and most effective option is to have someone with the proper gear and tools to extract the water.

2. Tear Out Wet Materials

Water damage can lead to professionals having to tear out any and all wet materials. This could be paneling, flooring and a number of different household materials that may need to be dried out. While some might be salvageable, once the material has sat in water, it’s likely that the damage on some of it is irreversible.

3. Dry Out Structure

With the damp materials out, it’s time to dry the inside of your home. This can be done by SERVPRO of Indianapolis South professional services if you want to have it done quickly and effectively.

4. Begin Restoration

Storm restoration can begin once you’ve completed the tear out and drying. After this, you can bring the undamaged items back into your home and begin to rebuild. The reason it’s important not to start this step until after the cleanup is complete is that you never want to rebuild when there’s a risk that there may still be water damage or mold left behind.

When the storm is over, the cleanup process is still only beginning. Fortunately, these four steps should be able to help you understand the importance of assessing what you need to tear out after water has damaged your home to start your storm restoration.

Ask The Experts: What Is Considered A "Biohazard" in Indianapolis?

7/23/2021 (Permalink)

When people find out that SERVPRO does cleanup of biohazards, many people's brains go straight to the CSI crime scene kind of cleaning, which, to be fair, is PART of what we can help with, but is certainly not all of what we do when it comes to our biohazard services.

Biohazards range from microorganisms such as bacteria and microbes to chemicals and other toxic substances that may pose health hazards. Whenever solid waste or contaminated water saturate building materials or contents, biohazard cleanups and restoration treatments are necessary for health and safety.

So What All Is Considered A Biohazard?

As discussed above, crime scene cleanup of what we do, but does not cover everything or even come close for that matter. Here are several more areas that our biohazard team can assist with.

Animal Remains or Waste

Bloodborne Pathogens

Chemical Spills

Forensic Investigation Chemicals

Hoarding Scenes

Unattended Decomposition

Industrial or Home Accidents

Methamphetamine Labs

Sewage Backups

These areas don't cover 100% of what we do in the area of biohazard cleanup, but they certainly are a good start! We are faster to any disaster and have the equipment, expertise, and equipment to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Safety Tips When Using Your Fire Pit

6/17/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Pit Safety for Indianapolis and Johnson County area.

Fire pits are perfect for your outdoor gatherings. The fire pit is a beautiful addition to your landscaping and a great way to complement and add a relaxing ambiance to your property.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South wants to make sure you are keeping you and your property safe by following these safety tips!

Fire Pit Location

  • Make sure to place your fire pit AT LEAST 10 feet away from any structures. This may help prevent sparks from hitting your home and excessive smoke from entering your or your neighbor’s home.
  • Do NOT place your fire pit under tree branches or on a covered deck. Make sure your fire pit is in a location where the flames and sparks will not hit any objects.

Fire Pit Site Preparation

  • If your fire pit is not built into the ground, make sure you have stone, brick, gravel, or concrete under the pit. This will help prevent the area below the pit from burning.
  • You should NEVER place your pit over dry grass or over a wooden deck. This is to prevent any overheating or causing of a spark a fire to the ground below it.

 Weather

  • Do not use your fire pit if it is windy.  Windy conditions may cause sparks from the fire to fall in an area that is flammable.
  • When you are using your fire pit, you should observe what direction the breeze is blowing. You should move any object out of the way of where the breeze is blowing to help prevent a fire from occurring.

Lighting the Fire Pit

  • When lighting your fire pit, do NOT use lighter fluid or gasoline to light the pit or to relight fires.
  • The easiest and safest way to light your fire pit is to place kindling under the wood.  Kindling can be newspaper, dead leaves, pine needles, wood shaving and small pieces of tree bark.  Place a small stack under the wood in your fire pit and try lighting it instead of the wood.  Once the kindling catches fire, the rest of the wood should also ignite.
  • You should always keep water nearby just in case the fire inside of the pit spreads.

Before you use your fire pit, you should check your town’s laws on fire pits. Some towns require a permit and an inspection. If the unfortunate happens, call the experts at

When Commercial Fire Damage Strikes, You Need To Keep These Critical Things In Mind (Part 1 of 2)

6/14/2021 (Permalink)

Fire is amongst the worst disasters that can affect the running of a business and can halt operations for a long period due to damage to the business office and various office equipment. Therefore, it is imperative that the business owner initiates a fire damage restoration process as soon as possible to reverse the immense fire damage to the business. This will significantly assist in getting the business back in operation as fast as possible. It is important to use a fire restoration company as they provide other beneficial services other than just fire restoration. Here are six important steps a business owner should adhere to during a business’s fire damage restoration process.

1. Have an emergency contact

It is imperative that a business owner should have the emergency contacts of a fire restoration company as they offer immediate emergency services. This means that they will avail of their services as soon as they are contacted and offer immediate relief services that will save the business thousands of dollars. In addition to putting out the fire together with the fire department, the fire restoration personnel will prevent the spreading of the fire and damage to the rest of the business property.

2. Damage Assessment

The next step conducted by the restoration company in this process is assessing the extent of fire damage to the business property. This step entails assessing how far the soot, smoke, and fire have traveled and the extent of damage to the furniture and walls of the property. The damage assessment step is important as it provides an accurate and realistic damage report that assists in making an action plan, accurate cost of restoration and the exact time frame to conduct the restoration.

3. Sealing and Tarping Services

As the restoration of the damaged process begins, it is imperative that the fire damage restoration company prevent further damage to the business property by offering sealing and tarping services. This aims to avoid increasing the restoration costs for the business owner as well as completing the restoration process within the set time frame. Luckily, this process can be executed concurrently with other restoration processes such as the water damage restoration process. This ensures that any identified water leak or water pipe damage is fixed within the shortest time possible to avoid the spreading of water all over the business property and causing more damage.

When Commercial Fire Damage Strikes, You Need To Keep These Critical Things In Mind (Part 2 of 2)

Here is part 2 of the 6 most important steps a business owner should adhere to during a business’s fire damage restoration process.

4. Damage Clean Up

When all sealing and tarping services are complete, the fire damage restoration company proceeds to next stage, which entails cleaning and clearing up the fire damaged area. This process involves cleaning away the soot, dust, and smoke from the surfaces of the business property. In most cases, a building’s walls and other surfaces appear charred, dark and stained. Therefore, cleaning of the surfaces plays a big role in ensuring the business property regains its normal look. Other damage restoration processes such as repairing water leaks and damaged water pipes are done and completed at this stage. Finally, removing and disposing all damaged items from the property marks the end of the clean-up phase. These include office furniture and other equipment that are beyond repair due to fire damage or water contamination. It is important that the business owner replaces such items with new ones to avoid future restoration and repair expenses.

5. Damage Repair and Property Restoration

This step entails restoring damaged furniture and other office equipment with new ones as well as repairing damaged office property such as installing new wall cabinets and repainting the office walls. This step ensures the business premises return to its former glory. However, other than conducting restoration activities, the business owner is presented with the opportunity to introduce and carry out new renovations to the business property. This will leave the business property looking even better than before, with new furniture, new office design, and a complete property facelift.

6. Consultation

After the completion of the fire damage restoration process, the fire damage restoration company can offer free advice, video tutorials, or even short seminars on various ways to prevent fires in the future, better office designs, and fire detection devices that can help detect smoke and fire within the business premises.

What is Water Loss Mitigation?

Chances Are...

Chances are, IF you ever experience a water loss in your Johnson County Home and find yourself in need of the services of SERVPRO of Indianapolis South, it will probably be the ONLY time that you need us for such a mitigation.  We have ONE chance to make a positive impact in your life and provide the personal, professional service that we strive for every day.

So How Do We Do It...?

Once we arrive on-site, one of the first steps in evaluating the damage at your home or business is to understand the situation based on your first-hand account and walk the affected areas with you to do a visual inspection and note any safety concerns, etc.  Once we gauge the types of materials that are affected, we use the appropriate type of moisture meter to map out the extent of the damage.  We also take some atmospheric measurements that are essential to properly dry the space, including relative humidity and temperature.  All of these data contribute to a strategy that may involve:

  • extraction of standing water, or water soaked into carpets or other materials
  • demolition of non-salvageable materials, such as carpet, drywall, or baseboard
  • setting up specialized drying equipment such as dehumidifiers and air movers in a specific and strategic way to optimize air flow and to promote drying

When the Dust Settles...

The average dry time for most residential and small commercial water damages is three to five days - but we don't just set our equipment and forget it!  Our skilled technicians return daily to monitor the equipment and to make sure that our drying plan is going accordingly.

Long Story, Made Short...

We at SERVPRO of Indianapolis South are committed to seeing your loss through, from the moment we set foot on-site until the last efforts are made to restore your home or business to a safe, clean, healthy state - "Like it never even happened."

Water Damage and IICRC Certification of Your Restoration Firm

Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.

More than just removing excess water, restorers certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to preloss conditions. Through timely response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold and other health effects can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur.

All IICRC-certified professionals have the training and experience to identify moisture sources, evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected), contain damage, remove contamination and dry materials to ensure that mold will not return.

More About the Importance of IICRC Certification

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a certification and standard-setting nonprofit organization for the inspection, cleaning and restoration industries.

When you see a IICRC logo, you can be confident that an IICRC-certified experienced, qualified professional is caring for your valuable property. IICRC Certified Firms employ technicians who, after study, field experience and passing comprehensive exams, have received IICRC certifications in specific cleaning, restoration and inspection categories such as upholstery, wood flooring, stone and tile flooring, carpet cleaning, odor removal, mold remediation, water damage, fire damage restoration and more.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South is an IICRC-certified restoration company. Call us today at 317-784-3008 if you have water damage.

Clogs are no laughing matter, but SERVPRO is here to help!

Clogged toilet? Water overflow? Ask yourself if any of these items have been disposed of in your toilet!

During this crisis, lots of Americans are at home and with schools being closed until further notice it's important to keep your house in order. The last thing you need is water making a pathway throughout your main level caused by a clogged toilet.

Items that are not flush-able:

  • Flush-able wipes
  • Paper Towels
  • Facial Tissue
  • Lysol Wipes
  • Similar Products

#WipesClogPipes

Flush-able wipes are not truly flush-able. They might go down the drain but they do not break down like regular toilet paper. Flushing these items will clog sewers and cause backups and overflows at wastewater treatment facilities, creating an additional public health risk in the midst of the corona-virus pandemic.

The Importance of a Fire Escape Plan In Your Indianapolis Business

12/18/2020 (Permalink)

Every workplace needs a fire escape plan. This plan should be posted throughout a building and shared with all occupants. Be sure to train new employees and perform regular drills to ensure that the emergency escape plan will prove useful in the event of a fire.

Plan Evacuation Routes

Do you have an accurate, updated floor plan available? It is vital that you do in order to make sure that you have the most up to date information to plan your evacuation from. You also will want to:

  • Identify primary and secondary routes
  • Ensure that routes are reasonable for occupants
  • Obtain equipment such as an escape ladder

Secondary routes may be less than ideal, but they should still be practical. Keep the age and physical condition of occupants in mind. Post the emergency escape plan at strategic locations.

Test Fire Detection and Suppression Equipment

Many commercial properties are equipped with advanced detection and suppression systems. A fire escape plan should include regular tests to ensure the functionality of detectors and sprinklers. Hardwired alarm systems should have battery backups, and it is important to replace batteries that function as a main or backup power source. Make sure that fire extinguishers are of the appropriate class and filled with suppressant.

Keep Track of Occupants

Every business should maintain a current contact list. This list should include these details:

  • Names
  • Contact information
  • Departments

Keep this list in a location where it can be accessed remotely or physically removed in the event of a fire. Every business should have a safe location where employees can gather outside. This place should be far enough away from the structure without being downwind.

A proper office evacuation plan really should list out the employees responsible for attempting to evacuate critical contents as well.  The more specific, the better! It is for this reason that it is vital to update your evacuation plan on a regular basis to correspond to any personnel changes that have happened in your company.

If a fire damages a building, you need to call a mitigation and restoration company to resume business as soon as possible.

So if disaster strikes your business, give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

Important Steps Pertaining To Your Water Loss Greenwood, Indiana

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

Don't put yourself or your home in a bad position by waiting after a water damage in your home.

Water damage can impact even the most valuable possessions inside your home. It can wreak havoc and damage furniture, appliances, plumbing equipment, and electronics. Over time, water damage can lead to the growth of mold inside your home.

The worst thing to do when facing water damage is to “save the cleanup for later”. Some people wait a while when first spotting signs of water damage to see if it will naturally go away. Even if the water evaporates on its own, the source of the damage still exists and will likely result in future problems.

Surving The Storm In Franklin, Indiana

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

Your Franklin home is your most valuable asset so don’t get caught in the rain.  Take steps now to secure your property before storms dampen your mood.

Installing items such as window shutters, garage door braces, and roof clips can all help to protect your Avo home as well.

The Aftermath Of A Storm Power Outage in Whiteland, Indiana

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

After A Storm Damage Power Outage

  • If electrical power lines are down, don’t touch them. Keep your family and pets away. Report downed lines to your utility company.

Throw Out Unsafe Food

  • Throw away any food (particularly meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers) that has been exposed to temperatures higher than 40° F (4° C) for 2 hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color or texture. When in doubt, throw it out!
  • Never taste food or rely on appearance or odor to determine its safety. Some foods may look and smell fine, but if they have been at room temperature too long, bacteria causing food-borne illnesses can start growing quickly. Some types of bacteria produce toxins that cannot be destroyed by cooking.
  • If you are not sure food is cold enough, take its temperature with a food thermometer.
  • If food in the freezer is colder than 40° F and has ice crystals on it, you can refreeze it.

Commercial Fire Damage in Indianapolis, IN

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

Air Purification After Fire Damage

Smoke smells and smoke damage are present in the air after a fire, which will require removal purifying. A restoration company will employ a variety of techniques to clean and sanitize the air so that the property can be usable once again. Fire damage restoration cannot be complete without a complete purification of the air.

A fire in a business can extensively damage drywall or paint, which will need to be restored last once all other damage is handled. Once the smoke smell is completely removed, fire cleanup will be completed with aesthetic touches.

Whether it is just to board up the property or to remove all the water from firefighting, SERVPRO takes on a lot of the burden, providing stability to a shaken individual.

Rain Rain Go Away! Is Your Home or Business Prepared in Greenwood, Indiana?

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

Preparing Your Residence for Spring/Summer Showers and Water Damage

Rain, rain, go away. We all know the months are coming when we will start to think of these words to that childhood song. Rain is necessary to nourish flowers and trees, and that’s great! But sometimes all that water can cause damage to your home or business.

Is your residence ready? Let’s talk about ways to prepare.

  • Take a look at rain gutters. Clogged gutters will cause rainwater to backup, damaging your roof and walls.
  • Look for water collecting around the foundation of your Centerton residence, and take steps to redirect it, if needed, to avoid water damage.

Call our team at SERVPRO of Indianapolis anytime, whether you need assistance with water damage, fire damage or mold prevention. We will mitigate and reconstruct the property "Like it never even happened."

When Storms Strike in Greenwood, SERVPRO Strikes Back!

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

During the spring and summer months, thunderstorms that produce lightning, thunder, heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, tornadoes, and hail can occur. These storms are extremely dangerous and can appear suddenly with little warning and may only last a few minutes but have the strength and power to cause a great amount of damage.

Before A Thunderstorm

  • Check weather forecasts daily, purchase an all-hazard weather radio and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
  • Plan outdoor events near a secure shelter where people can go in the event of a storm.
  • Keep trees trimmed to prevent limbs from falling onto buildings, cars or people.
  • If hail or strong winds are expected, park vehicles under a shelter to avoid damage.
  • Make sure preparedness kits are portable for easy transport if evacuation is necessary. Preparedness kits should be tailored to household needs.
  • Bring pets indoors before a storm moves into the area. Sheds, dog houses, and garages do not provide ample protection from lightning, hail, high winds, and tornadoes.

Power Outage Due to The Storm in Franklin, Indiana

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

During a Storm Power Outage

Staying Safe Indoors

  • Use flash lights in the dark, not candles.
  • Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic lights will be out and roads will be congested.
  • If you are using a generator be sure you understand the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and how to use generators safely.

Food Safety

  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. An unopened refrigerator will keep foods cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed.
  • First use perishable food from the refrigerator. Perishables should have a temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) or below to be safe to eat. Then use food from the freezer.
  • Use your non-perishable foods and staples after using food from the refrigerator and freezer.
  • If it looks like the power outage will continue beyond a day, prepare a cooler with ice for your freezer items.
  • Keep food in a dry, cool spot and keep it covered at all times.

Electrical Equipment

  • Turn off and unplug all unnecessary electrical equipment, including sensitive electronics.
  • Turn off or disconnect any appliances (like stoves), equipment or electronics you were using when the power went out. When power comes back on, surges or spikes can damage equipment.
  • Leave one light turned on so you’ll know when the power comes back on.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup in Franklin, Indiana

6/29/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South smoke and soot cleanup.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Home Safety Tips For Parents with Children going Back To School

Home security and safety are especially important if children will be alone at home for any length of time. Walking home alone, entering an empty house, and staying safe at home can be a challenge. But with guidance, rules, and helpful products, parents can help children stay safe at home.

  • Teach kids to lock the door and not open it for anyone: Children should know how to properly lock all doors. Teach them that they should never open the front door while they’re home alone, even for deliveries or mail.
  • Show kids how to use the alarm system: Make sure children know how to properly use the alarm system, both arming and disarming it. You should also show them how to hit the panic button and what to do if there’s an emergency.
  • Plan a safe route to school: Work with your child to plan a direct route to school. Avoid as many street crossings as possible as well as open fields, vacant lots, and desolate areas.
  • Help children memorize important numbers: Teach kids their home address, their home number, your cell phone number, and the number of a neighbor who can help. You should also teach them how to use 911 in an emergency.
  • Teach children about stranger danger: Make sure kids know not to talk to strangers on their way home from school, even if they seem friendly or helpful.
  • Make an emergency plan for fire: Work on an emergency plan together and determine how your child will exit in case there’s a fire.
  • Keep communication open: Ask your child to text or call when they get home each day. Encourage them to call you if there’s any problem at all so you can help.
  • Have a plan for lost keys: Even responsible children can lose keys. Choose a destination for a spare key or leave one with a close neighbor or family member.
  • Establish rules for safety at home: Determine whether children will be allowed to use the stove or oven when home alone, rules for visitors or leaving the house, even screen time. Set kids up for a safe afternoon at home by establishing your expectations.

Thunderstorm Tips

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

Storm Readiness in Indianapolis South

Your local SERVPRO of Indianapolis South is alert and ready for storm damage concerns. Call us today at 317-784-3008

Firework Safety Tips for Indianapolis South

6/27/2019 (Permalink)

Happy Fourth of JULY!!!

With the Fourth of July approaching quickly, SERVPRO of Indianapolis would like to provide safety tips for you and your family.

The start of summer is the perfect time to gather with family and friends for good food and fun times. Just remember

· Kids should never play with fireworks. Things like firecrackers, rockets, and sparklers are just too dangerous. If you give kids sparklers, make sure they keep them outside and away from the face, clothing, and hair. Sparklers can reach 1,800°F (982°C) — hot enough to melt gold.
· Never try to make your own fireworks.
· Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents.
· Steer clear of others setting off fireworks. They can backfire or shoot off in the wrong direction.
· Never throw or point fireworks at someone, even as a joke.
· Don't hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting. Wear eye protection, and don't carry fireworks in your pocket — the friction could set them off.
· Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush and leaves and flammable substances. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that local fire departments respond to more 50,000 fires caused by fireworks each year.
· Light one firework at a time (not in glass or metal containers), and never relight a dud.
· Don't allow kids to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Some may still be ignited and can explode at any time.
· Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the trash can.
· Think about your pet. Animals have sensitive ears and can be very frightened or stressed by the Fourth of July and other big celebrations. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they'll run loose or get injured.

What To Do When Your Basement Floods

5/22/2019 (Permalink)

Flooded Basement in Indianapolis

A flooded basement can be a nasty experience, even for experienced homeowners. Here are some “Do’s and Don’ts” to consider when your basement floods.

Unexpected water problems in your home are never welcomed, but they are unfortunately common in the Indianapolis area. A flooded basement may cause even an experienced home-owner feelings of helplessness and panic. If you discover a basement flood, try not to get too excited – we can help!  SERVPRO of Indianapolis South provides 24/7/365 emergency service with uniformed, professional, IICRC certified technicians.

After you call us, here are some things you can do to reduce the damage if your basement floods.

  • Ensure local authorities have given the “all clear” for your area.
  • Safety first! Ensure your electricity is turned off before entering a flooded structure. If you aren’t sure the power is off or if you can’t safely reach the breaker panel call a qualified electrician. We can handle this for you if you call us first!
  • Determine the cause or source of the water. If a pipe has burst and is leaking water, shut off the water. There should be a main shutoff valve where the water enters the house.
  • It may also be possible to shutoff water closer to the leak. If the water is leaking from a supply line to a sink, toilet or similar fixture there is often a shutoff valve near the floor close to the fixture or under the sink.
  • If you aren’t sure where the water is coming from or how to shut off the water a plumber can help. Again, we have relationships with licensed emergency plumbers and can call a reputable one for you.
  • Unless the water is caused by rain or rising water, take action quickly to reduce the flood damage. If the flood was caused by rain or storm water wait until the flood water has receded before you start working on the problem.
  • For your protection wear boots and gloves before entering a flooded area. You may also choose to wear a protective mask.  Floors can be very slippery when wet so use caution when walking on wet floors and stairs.
  • If there is a floor drain in your basement check to see if it has become clogged during the flood. Sometimes, removing debris from a floor drain will allow the standing water to drain.
  • If you wish to get started before we arrive, begin removing water from the basement. You can use a suction pump, a pool pump, a wet/dry vacuum or even a mop and bucket depending on the amount of water involved.  Don’t use a household vacuum cleaner to remove water.  A flooded basement can turn into a big job so don’t hesitate to call in the professionals to help!
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and pillow cushions for drying.
  • To prevent staining, don’t leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don’t try to save wet cardboard boxes – they tend to grow mold and mildew quickly. Remove things like pictures and papers from cardboard boxes for drying.  We offer document drying services if necessary.
  • Don’t use the television or other household appliances while standing on wet floors or if the appliances have been exposed to water. Electrical appliances should be checked by a qualified electrician or repairman to determine if they are safe to use.
  • Carpet and carpet pad can sometimes be dried and saved. However, because carpet pad acts like a sponge it requires professional equipment to extract the water from it before drying.  Usually if a homeowner tries to dry carpet and pad themselves it does not dry properly and begins to suffer from microbial growth and smells musty.  This part of the job is best left to a professional!
  • If you have insurance for your property, call your insurance company or agent and report the problem. You’ll want to check your coverage limits, the amount of the deductible and claim procedures. Note that some types of water damage such as broken pipes and sump pumps are more likely to be covered by a homeowner’s insurance policy than others.  Rising water damage may require a flood insurance policy.  Be sure to check with your insurance company up front to determine if you have adequate coverage.

Should you call SERVPRO to help with your flooded basement?

Even a small amount of water can turn into a big job quickly and it’s a good idea to at least call us and ask for some advice.  Even if you are prepared to work hard to clean up the mess you are not likely to have the right equipment and training to dry the basement properly.  This often leads to problems with mold or mildew developing later which can turn into an even more expensive problem that could have been avoided.  Call us first and we can help you decide if you need professional help for your flooded basement or not.

Is a Leaking Roof in Center Grove an Emergency?

4/22/2019 (Permalink)

Keep your leaking roof damage to a minimum.

Roof leaks are a problem in any weather, but a roof that starts to leak during a heavy rainstorm can quickly turn into a major emergency. Unfortunately, rainy weather is when a roof leak is most likely to happen.

No resident ever wants to find water leaking from their ceiling.  It is important that you take immediate action to avoid additional damage to your home.

Containing the Leak

The water leak may have caused a bulge or discoloration to your ceiling which may indicate that the water is collecting and pooling on the other side or the ceiling.

Get a trash can or bucket and place under the site of the damaged area.  Next, take a screwdriver and use it to puncture the very middle of the bulge where the water is accumulating.  Doing this may prevent the entire ceiling from collapsing.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South and their IICRC Professional Technicians are available 24/7 to provide emergency water extraction and water mitigation to return your home to “Like it never even happened”.

Dangers of Waiting

Immediate action to a roof leak can minimize any future damage and possibly prevent any microbial growth. Avoiding or ignoring stains on the ceiling or even bubbling or bulges may often lead to a damaging and costly repair.

Are You Prepared for a Home or Business Fire?

3/1/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Repair Process

What happens after your home or business fire

If you have never had a fire in your business or home, it is important to be prepared because no one is immune from it. Fire in a home or business can be caused by a variety of things. Many business or homes have been destroyed by fire damage, not because fire suppression did not take place, but because the owners did not know what to do after the fire.
The fire department responds promptly to help put out the fire. Their work most likely will cause damage such as breaking through doors and windows to access the fire areas. Water will also be pumped into the building, causing floods all over the floor.

What next after the fire department efforts

After the fire has been put out, it is when you will realize the extent of the fire damage and that caused by the firefighters. Fire damage, soot damage, the smoke damage, smoke smell and water damage are evident. Fire damage restoration effort must begin immediately, or more damage could occur.

Professional fire damage restoration

Once the fire has been put out, you must not wait for long before starting to put things in order. Using a good fire restoration company, you will be able to get professionals who are trained and experienced in handling fire cleanup services. They first begin by assessing the level of fire damage. They board up the windows and doors that had broken by the firefighters. The importance of boarding up is to keep off intruders who could access and steal your items.

What to expect from the professional fire restoration company

When hiring SERVPRO of Indianapolis South, you can be assured of their services. These professionals use a plan to do the fire cleanup and prevent further damage that could be caused by water or the restoration process. All the items that could be repaired are salvaged and taken to their facility for specialized repair. Other items that require cleaning such as carpets could also be taken up for proper fire cleanup.
Flood water is drained from the rooms and soot damage, and smoke damage is handled effectively. Often fire damage leads to soot damage that results from the burning items, which cause ash and dust on the walls and vents. It has to be cleaned up to remove the dust and ash, which will allow for the repainting of the walls. You will also need to clean up smoke damage because the smoke smell is absorbed in all the porous items in the building. This smoke smell is cleaned up through deodorization and other methods.

The importance of using SERVPRO of Indianapolis South fire cleanup services

Hiring a professional fire damage restoration is essential because it ensures effective removal of soot damage, smoke smell, smoke damage, board up services and fire damage restoration. Finding the right fire restoration company would ensure a speedy restoration and allow you to go back to your normal life. It is important to seek the help of professionals in matters that you cannot handle on your own such as commercial fire damage because it could save you time and money.

Why Indianapolis South Smoke Damaged Homes Demand Residential Fire Restoration

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

Why Smoke Damaged Homes Demand Residential Fire Restoration

Why Smoke Damaged Homes Demand Residential Fire Restoration

Most people who live through fires know that they'll have to deal with fire damage. What you may not know is that in addition to getting rid of lingering smoke odors and cleaning soot from walls, you might have to make significant structural improvements.

The Reality of Being Rescued

When firefighters come to extinguish blazes, they often have to take extraordinary actions to prevent the spread of flames. Your rescuers might break down your doors or cut holes in your roof or walls. The water they use to put out the fire can soak building materials like drywall, wood and plaster, which may weaken their structural integrity.

The Aftermath of a Blaze

Homes ravaged by fires are often left wide open to the elements. To stop rain, snow, debris and other elements from entering holes and worsening your fire damage, you may have to

Put boards over windows and doors to prevent trespassing,
Install temporary construction materials, such as sheeting, to keep wildlife out, and
Make major replacements to damaged structural members, such as beams.

Getting on the Road to Restoration in a Smoke Damaged Home

Even if your property only sustains what looks like minor cosmetic harm, the lingering smoke odors can last for years. Cleaning soot from walls might seem like something you can do on your own, but the microscopic contaminants that you miss can make your smoke damaged home uninhabitable. Talking to a professional is the best way to recreate a healthy living space.

What to Do if Your Indianapolis area Hotel Floods

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

What to Do if Your Hotel Floods

Flooding is a common occurrence in many parts of the country, and we are certainly no strangers to it here in the Indianapolis area. Whether it happens as a flash flood or as a slow buildup from constant rain, you need to be prepared for this type of event. As a hotel owner, there are some specific things to be aware of:

  • Your guests. The people who are staying in your property are at the top of the list of concerns when it comes to flooding. Make sure everyone is aware of impending danger, and touch base with each guest to make sure they know how to stay safe. Getting emergency contacts for your guests is a good idea, too, in case something unexpected happens and you need the assistance of a close friend or family member.
  • Medical issues. If there are guests staying with you who have medical issues or are either very young or very elderly, it might be a wise idea to get these people to a facility that can watch over them closely, such as a hospital or community safe haven.
  • Vigilance. Even if you think the flood risk is low in your area, stay vigilant. Understand the potential exposure of your property, using reports from such organizations such as the NOAA Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service, which provides quarterly updates and maps that show areas that are at high risk during certain times of the year. Historic flood maps are another useful resource that will help you understand the potential risk where you are. Be informed as to how high water can possibly rise, and evacuate lower levels to make sure no one gets hurt.
  • Insurance. Take note of the flood insurance you have on your property before a flooding disaster strikes. Have your attorney go over it for you to make sure that your coverage is sufficient for any disaster that might bring water damage and storm damage. Copies of this coverage and all other key business information should be kept in a safe location that won’t be damaged by flood waters.
  • Proactive. Be proactive, and consider getting a sump pump to help minimize potential damages from flooding. Make sure all maintenance projects are current for the entire building, and especially the gutters, roofing, and doors and windows.
  • Emergency Kits. These may come in handy if people get stuck in the building for a few days. Water, food, first aid items, toiletries, batteries, flashlights, and other emergency items will need to be available in the event that a flood forces people to stay put.
  • Evacuation Plan. Design a flood evacuation route for your employees and guests and make sure it is posted where everyone can access it for a quick retreat.
  • Weather Eye. Keep an eye on the weather by accessing local weather broadcasts, and paying attention to evacuation orders. If the local authorities are insisting that you evacuate, it would be a good idea to follow their instructions.

Here at SERVPRO of Indianapolis South, we care about you and your business. We’re here in case an emergency happens, and we can help with clean-up projects both large and small. Call us today for help with damages from flooding or fire, and don’t forget that we’re mold remediation specialists!

The Dangers of Not Immediately Dealing with Water Damage

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

The benefits of dealing with water damage sooner rather than later

The Dangers of Not Immediately Dealing with Water Damage

Many people do not take the quick and rapid steps necessary when dealing with water in their Johnson County, IN home or business. They think that simply drying the floors with a few towels and fixing the problem that caused the flood damage is all that they need to do. If you're one of these people, you'll find yourself dealing with a lot of future problems when you do not immediately deal with the water damage that you see and hire a restoration company.

Structural Damage

The first type of damage that a pipe break can do is structural damage. Structural damage refers to any type of damage that weakens the integrity of your home. A pipe break can lead to a buildup of water in your walls that cause paint and wallpaper to peel away and the drywall in your home to soften. Something more serious like a supply line break can cause damage similar to that saw in a flooded home. Water cleanup, restoration and mitigation companies offer water cleanup services designed to reduce this damage.

Mildew

Though you probably notice mildew in your bathroom, you might not think twice about it because you know that you can use cleaning supplies to remove the mildew. When you have standing water in home or water in business that you do not clean up quickly, you risk that water becoming mildew. Mildew can grow through the whole room and leave you feeling slimy and unclean after taking a shower or changing clothes. Mitigation professionals know what drying methods to use and how to stop the growth of mildew.

Mold

A flooded home is susceptible to mold because the water damage creates the perfect habitat or environment for the mold. Mold looks for areas that are both warm and slightly wet, which is why you might see mold outside your home near your air conditioner. The longer that you leave standing water in the home or in business, the greater the risk is that mold will appear in the near future. If you do not begin drying the walls and floors right after you notice the flood damage, it can be much harder to stop the spread of that mold too.

Musty Smells

The restoration company that you turn to for help can tell you about some of the other dangers of taking too long to deal with drying and water cleanup like the musty smells that can take over your home or business. Mold vs Mildew in your Southport, IN home

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Mold vs Mildew: What is the Difference?

When it comes to mold and mildew many often wonder, “What is the difference?” HGTV.com compares mold and mildew to siblings, stating that they have a few matching characteristics but they also have some striking differences.

As for similarities, they both strive in warm, moist areas and they both are able to grow on a multitude of surfaces. They are also both two types of fungi that no one is ever happy to find in their home!

Differences between mold and mildew can be seen in their appearance. Mold is usually fuzzy in appearance and can be various different colors, but it is most often black or green. Mildew, on the other hand, usually grows in a flat pattern and may appear powdery. It is usually white or gray in color. One interesting difference between mildew and mold is that there is no use for mildew. On the contrary, some molds are actually used in food production. For example, Penicillium is used in the production of cheese.

While mold and mildew definitely have differences, the methods to prevent mold and mildew in the home are very much the same. All areas of the home need to be kept dry and moisture-free. Humidity levels inside the home should be checked and controlled. Any leaks need to be repaired quickly and HVAC systems should be inspected regularly.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South specializes in mold testing and remediation. If you suspect mold is an issue in your home, give us a call today!

Proper Ventilation Minimizes Risk of Mold Damage In Trafalgar, IN

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Tips to Keep Your Home Safe from Mold Damage

There are many possible causes of mold growth in the attic, including moisture seepage, condensation, poor insulation, and of course, poor attic ventilation. Many homeowners in Trafalgar, IN do not realize that the attic is not just a random part of the building construction, but a significant feature of a home. From this end, proper attic ventilation is important for a healthy home.

Keeping temperatures stable can go a long way towards preventing mold damage to your Trafalgar, IN home.  At SERVPRO of Indianapolis South, we have a team of IICRC-certified mold remediation experts who can help remedy the situation. The attic works as a buffer between the roof and the other rooms in your home, causing it to experience frequent temperature changes that lead to excessive heat and condensation. Both of these factors promote mold growth.

A good way to ensure proper attic ventilation and reduce the risk of mold damage is creating better airflow within the attic, which in turn efficiently removes moisture and excessive heat. Our SERVPRO of Indianapolis South technicians normally turns to dehumidifiers and other drying equipment for this purpose. After installing proper insulation, you need to ensure that all your vents are working properly. This step involves a number of considerations.

For starters, all the vents should be exactly the same to ensure a balanced air intake and better airflow through the attic. As a result, this eliminates any hot, static air that may contribute to mold growth and, consequently, mold damage. Secondly, you need to place the vents away from the sides of the house as much as possible. This step helps prevent the temperature of the walls from affecting the air entering the attic.

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South mold remediation experts can advise you on how to create enough space for proper air circulation in the attic. Typically, this involves leaving about 1 to 2 inches of space between the insulation and the roof sheathing. It is also recommendable to add pressure to the attic by increasing ventilation at the eaves and decreasing it at the ridge. This pressurization prevents the air inside the house from penetrating into the attic.

Storm Restoration: Steps To Take After Storm Damage in Center Grove, IN

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Clearing snow and ice from your roof and gutters can minimize your home damage

Storm Restoration: Steps To Take After Storm Damage

With the sudden change in climate condition, the disaster management authority is not only calling for homeowners to ensure their homes against perils such as flooding and other types of storm damage, but also to have storm remediation knowledge. Storm damages are fatal and if no necessary measures are taken these damages can stretch long after the storm. Below are tips from expert home restoration companies and the National Storm Damage Center on what to do after a storm.

Safety first

Most storms are characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall. Depending on the severity of the storms, property owners may experience severe wind damage and flooding. When this happens, the most important thing to do is run for shelter and only return after the necessary authorities have given the safety clearance.

During a storm, the roof is the most susceptible part of your home prone to damages hence the higher prevalence of roof damage remediation tasks. Wind damage may result in tree branches and other heavy material falling to your roof thus resulting to roof damage and roof leaks. Regardless of how small the storm damages may look in a certain property, it’s still advisable to call SERVPRO of Indianapolis South experts to help assess and evaluate the damages. This practice is still important when it comes to having a smooth storm remediation and compensation process since storm restoration companies and insurance providers rely on these reports to do roof repair and give compensation respectively.

Clean up

Cleaning up the after storm damage is not an easy task. Forget the fact that the process is physically involving, it is also emotionally draining to the damaged property owners. Expert storm restoration companies carry out this assignment depending on the type of damage to a property. For instance, in cases of flooding, the excess stagnated groundwater has to be drained out first. The best way to drain this water is by use of sump pumps.

When using sump pumps it is important to note that there is no a one-fit-all situation sump pump. You need advice from home restoration experts on the best sump pump to use. After draining the flood water and the groundwater, the other option is to fix the roof damage and the roof leaks before drying and dehumidifying the place. This order is of importance according to water restoration companies as it helps prevent repeating the same work twice.

The second way to handle your cleanup task is correcting the fixtures. Despite the fact that frozen pipes are characteristics ice damage to areas experiencing a distinct winter, they too occur at others parts of the world. A good home restoration firm should be able to melt the ice dams on the frozen pipes using chemicals. This process of ice damming should also be carried out on roof edges to help make way for melting ice damming thus preventing further roof damages to occur to your roof. After this process of unfreezing the frozen pipes and clearing the ice dams is complete, a proper insulation exercise when doing roof repair ought to take place to prevent the occurrence of these ice damming damages.

Planning the storm restoration

After all is said and done, the last step in storm remediation process should be restoring your Center Grove home to its former glory. Hiring competent and skilled storm restoration companies is important as this stage is quite demanding. Depending on the extent the groundwater damage, the water restoration expert may be forced to carry minor repairs such as roof repair in roof leaks to reconstructing an entire room. The property may also need to be fixed when it comes to the frozen pipes.

When it comes to flooding, no peril is greater than the other.

Dispose of These Items Following a Fire in your Franklin, Indiana home

10/9/2018 (Permalink)

Let SERVPRO of Indianapolis South make it “Like it never even happened”.

Dispose of These Items Following a Fire

A fire can be a devastating experience, even if your Franklin, Indiana home remains intact. Smoke and fire damage leave a mess for you to deal with, and it is overwhelming to decide what can be salvaged and what must be thrown away. You may be inclined to hold onto sentimental items or try to salvage food exposed to smoke, but here are some tips to help you decide what can stay and what you need to throw away.

Non-Perishable Food

Food safety after a fire is a serious issue. Non-perishable food exposed to high heat, smoke and firefighting chemicals should be discarded. It may seem obvious that opened canisters and items stored in permeable containers, such as cardboard and plastic, need to be trashed, but food in sealed cans and jars also need to go. Extreme heat can activate bacteria causing food to spoil even if the container is intact. Toxic fumes also have a way of permeating jars and aluminum cans, causing contamination. Throw away any food you even remotely suspect has been in a compromising situation.

Perishable Food

Sometimes perishable food can be salvaged even if the power went out. If it was well sealed in the refrigerator or freezer, it could be safe for about four hours. Inspect all food, but don’t make any assumptions. If the inside of the fridge smells smoky or you see soot, the food is bad. If food has an odor or a funny taste, get rid of it.

Cosmetics and Medicine

Make sure to inspect your medicine cabinet and makeup bag. Look for obvious signs of damage. If bottles are warped, melted or charred, dispose of them. Look for any signs of heat, soot, fire extinguisher dust or other suspect damage.

Clothing

With the proper cleaning, most textiles (clothes, curtains, bedding, etc.) can be recovered. Throw away anything that is burned. This is especially true if you are considering a young child’s clothing or bedding.

If dealing with your home’s contents after a fire is too much, hire a fire restoration company in Franklin, Indiana to take care of it for you. Visit  https://www.SERVPROindianapolissouth.com/ for more information on fire damage.

Every Second Counts in Indianapolis and Johnson County

10/9/2018 (Permalink)

Let SERVPRO of Indianapolis South make it “Like it never even happened”.

In a fire, seconds count. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of our community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy.

That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme: “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” is so important. It reinforces why everyone needs to have an escape plan. Here are this year’s key campaign messages:

  • Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
  • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
  • Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
  • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

Have you contacted your local fire department? See how you can get involved with them and your community to prevent house fires. Sometimes they will have events or give out smoke detectors for your home. Don't think this could never happen to you because it easily could. We don't have control over everything in our homes! Be safe and have a plan!

Drying Your Greenwood Water Damaged Home

After the water removal step, your floors and walls may look dry at first glance, but they are still wet to the touch. They use specialized equipment, including industrial air movers and dehumidifiers, to remove water retained by building materials and other hard-to-access moisture. They’ll carefully monitor the progress using moisture meters until the materials return to acceptable drying goals.

  • Use Dehumidification Equipment

How Secondary Damage Can Make Commercial Flooding Worse

If your business floods, your first concern may be the rising water itself. While this is certainly a problem, it’s also important to avoid secondary damage. The increased levels of humidity in the room can cause black mold to spread. Here are a few ways you can avoid this problem after a flood in Greenwood, IN:

  • Call a restoration company immediately
  • Thoroughly clean all damaged items
  • Keep an eye out for signs of mold for a few weeks after restoration

It’s essential for business owners to follow each of these steps to stop the damage. Furthermore, understanding how secondary damage occurs can help you avoid it.

Plenty of Humidity

Even a few inches of water can significantly increase the humidity levels in a room. This high humidity means that there is a lot of water in the air. That moisture in the air then sticks to the walls, surfaces, and furniture in the area.

Moisture Leads to Mold

When the water in the air lands on particular surfaces, it can begin to grow black mold. Unfortunately, that means that the mold grows in places where you may not expect it.

How does moisture make mold? Mold spores are all around us. However, without the necessary water levels, they don’t grow into anything dangerous. Once humidity rises in your business, those previously harmless mold spores become a problem.

The Clock is Ticking

The very second water spills into your business, you’re on a timer to prevent mold and other problems. In most cases, you have only 24 to 48 hours until the mold is visible. This is one of the reasons it is important to call SERVPRO of Indianapolis South immediately.

Black mold and other secondary damage can make flooding in your business worse than it already would have been. Be sure to contact SERVPRO of Indianapolis South as soon as you see signs of flooding and avoid this problem altogether. Visit www.SERVPROindianapolissouth.com or call 317-784-3008 for more information on commercial water damage.

Moisture and Mold Prevention and Control Tips

6/15/2018 (Permalink)

Moisture Control is the Key to Mold Control

  • When water leaks or spills occur indoors - act quickly. If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow.
  • Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.
  • Make sure the ground slopes away from the building foundation, so that water does not enter or collect around the foundation.
  • Keep air conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly.
  • Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity. Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50) instrument available at many hardware stores.
  • If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes act quickly to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity.

Actions that will help to reduce humidity

  • Vent appliances that produce moisture, such as clothes dryers, stoves, and kerosene heaters to the outside where possible. (Combustion appliances such as stoves and kerosene heaters produce water vapor and will increase the humidity unless vented to the outside.)
  • Use air conditioners and/or de-humidifiers when needed.
  • Run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering. Use exhaust fans or open windows whenever cooking, running the dishwasher or dishwashing, etc.

Actions that will help prevent condensation

  • Reduce the humidity.
  • Increase ventilation or air movement by opening doors and/or windows, when practical. Use fans as needed.
  • Cover cold surfaces, such as cold water pipes, with insulation.
  • Increase air temperature.

Conditions in Greenwood Might Be Right For Mold

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South knows what to do if mold grows in your home

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Indianapolis South to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

Fireplace Safety

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Fireplace Safety

  • Fireplaces should not be used as furnaces. Use a fireplace for a short-duration fire — no longer than five hours.
  • Keep the glass open to allow air to be drawn up to cool the chimney, but keep the screen closed to prevent sparks from jumping onto the carpeting.
  • Never leave a fire unattended when children are in the house. Adults, even if near, should not allow children to play near or with fire tools and equipment.
  • Open a window when using the fireplace to prevent the room from becoming smoky. The air coming in from the window will go up the chimney.
  • Before making a fire, open the glass doors, pull aside the screen curtains, and place the kindling, newspaper and logs inside. Next, open the damper and a window. The window needs to be open only a few inches. You can check to make sure the smoke will go up the chimney properly by lighting a match, quickly blowing it out and watching the smoke to see whether it's going up and out.
  • Keep a nonflammable rug (available at fireplace-supply stores) in front of the fireplace so that sparks won't melt or otherwise damage your carpeting.
  • Use fireplace tools to handle burning logs. Never use your hands.
  • Use a chimney cap to prevent water damage, to keep animals from nesting and to keep debris from blocking the chimney and causing carbon monoxide to flow into the house. Use a spark arrester to help prevent sparks from flying out, which could start a fire on the roof or lawn.
  • Glass doors may develop tough stains from flames and heat. To clean them, make sure the glass doors are cool, then scrape off any thick gunk deposits with a razor blade. Add a squirt of liquid dishwashing detergent to a bucket of warm water, or add a cup of vinegar to a gallon of water. Spray or sponge the cleaner on, and then wipe it away with newspaper (which is lint-free). Another option is to buy glass cleaner at a fireplace store.
  • Fireplace coals can remain hot enough to start a fire for up to three days, so always wait at least that long before removing the ashes. At that point, close the damper to prevent cold air in the flue from stirring up excess dust while you're removing the ashes. Be sure to wear a dust mask and open a window in the same room as the fireplace to prevent negative air pressure. Use a shovel to scoop the ashes into a metal container. Store the container far from combustible materials and surfaces and wood floors.
  • Never use a vacuum to clean up ashes, because live coals may remain in those ashes.
  • Have a certified chimney sweep inspect and clean the chimney when necessary. Have him show you how to check it yourself, too. The chimney should be checked at least once a year or after about 80 fires.
  • Shine brass fireplace utensils with Worcestershire sauce and a toothbrush.
  • Clean the firebox (the area where the logs burn) at least once a week during the months you use it, when ash builds up. Leave about an inch of ash because it acts as insulation, allowing the coals to heat faster and retain the heat easier. Keep the firebox completely clean during the months when the fireplace is not in use.
  • To clean an exterior slate hearth, wash, dry and coat it with lemon oil every six weeks to make it shine. For cleaning exterior brick hearths, buy a brick cleaner at a fireplace shop.

Does Your Beech Grove Home Have a Mold Problem?

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

In Beech Grove, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

We are an IICRC Certified Firm

SERVPRO of Indianapolis South and Johnson County is an IICRC firm. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies. IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo.

IICRC Certified Firms must

• Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.

• Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.

• Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.

• Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.

• Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Mr. Neal McNalley
General Manager

Dear Sir,

Yesterday when our SERVPRO team left I asked for your e-mail so that I could send you a compliment on the two men that worked our home the past week.

Dixie and I had never experienced a water issue in our home prior to this incident. This was quite the learning experience for the two of us. Our home represents a lifetime of savings and work and we are both very proud of our residence.

When the leak happened we had no idea what to expect or how this would be handled. Our two SERVPRO men showed up a week ago Tuesday and James was our lead assisted by David. I wanted to give both these men a big thank you. They walked us through the situation updating us when they arrived and when they left and what to expect the next day. They were both very professional and helped greatly with a very uncomfortable home these past days.

We would both recommend your firm to our family and friends. These two did a great job and their efforts were appreciated greatly.

Sincerely,
Dixie and Steve
