SERVPRO of Indianapolis South Brings Ingenuity to Water Damage Restoration

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO has advanced equipment, some developed by our team, to expedite water extraction from flooded Indianapolis warehouses and structures.

Why SERVPRO Is the Right Choice for Water Extraction

We have all heard the expression that "Necessity is the mother of invention." The owner / general manager of this SERVPRO franchise, Steve Dussault, took the slogan to heart and developed a useful water extraction tool.

Commercial water extraction is crucial to keeping warehouses and fabrication plants operational during significant water leaks or flooding events in Indianapolis. Typically, flooding on large concrete pads in these types of facilities is not deep; often only about 1/4", but the water migrates over a large area. The overall volume of water may be hundreds to thousands of gallons, sufficient to disrupt business routines.

The Shallow Water Removal Tool

Since time is of the essence for water extraction to minimize work stoppages and potential capital equipment and inventory losses, our SERVPRO owner created this simple device to remove standing water from hard, concrete surfaces effortlessly. This tool is attached to the end of a portable or truck-mounted extractor wand.

The Basic Components of the Shallow Water Extraction Tool

  • 6" PVC pipe cap
  • 8" Drain cover (fits 6" PVC pipe)
  • 1 ½" ABS bulkhead fitting
  • 1 ½" PVC pipe and 90-degree elbow
  • Suction air inlet – cut from 5-gallon bucket lid or other scrap plastic. Secured with stainless bolt, washers, and nylon insert locknut.
  • 3 GM plastic push rivets – provide space to keep the suction screen slightly off the floor

The Photo illustrates the device with the gooseneck PVC connector and the black strainer that sets in the low point of the extraction area. The truck-mounted water pump hose on our SERVPRO van, or a portable extractor for a smaller volume of water, connects to the unit. Our extractors pull a powerful vacuum and can quickly extract large quantities of liquid.

We aim to service our Indianapolis commercial customers and residential neighbors most efficiently and cost-effectively to restore their properties to preloss condition, "Like it never even happened." Even with our advanced inventory of water damage restoration equipment, small innovations like this shallow water extractor provide added techniques for service improvement.
